TITLE TOWN with special guest DJ BUSCRATES

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party
w/ special guest DJ BUSCRATES
SATURDAY, April 30th
Shadow Lounge
5972 Baum Blvd. (E. Liberty)
9 PM-2 AM, 21+, $5; 18+, $8

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party returns to Shadow Lounge ONCE AGAIN on Saturday, April 30th. This is where you gather to lose your blues and show off your dancing shoes. Don’t wait too late … hurry up and get there early. Record after record 45s get stacked and as the night progresses the Lounge gets packed!

This month Title Town welcomes a maestro of contemporary modern funk and hip hop production, Orlando “Buscrates” Marshall aka the Sixteen Bit Ensemble. He will be in the house throwing down a not-so-common, all forty-five soul & funk set with us. If you’re unfamiliar, he is one of Pittsburgh’s own. Back in 2009 his debut vinyl release was issued on 7″ by the locally-based Harmony Society imprint. Late last year he collaborated with J. Malls on The Top Shelf Collectors mix CD. His most recent project is the debut vinyl release by his super producer group ELQ (East Liberty Quarters) on Rotating Souls Records. In addition to all of that he has an extensive digital-only catalog as well.

FYI – This is going to be an insane night all across the city. There are multiple annual events going on in addition to the regular monthly options, as well as the other random things that pop up. We still recommend that you arrive early to ensure admission, but the attendance may very well be a little bit lighter than normal. In which case there may not be as long of a line to wait in … YAY!

So put it on your calendars and make your mental notes. We’ll get the night started with the good slow stuff to put you in the mood and proceed to make you shake it from there. We spin the classics as well as the material that you won’t hear anywhere else in the city of Pittsburgh, or beyond. Buscrates is in the house, so prepare yourself for an above average dose of the eighties boogie funk. TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party at Shadow Lounge is where you need to be the last Saturday of the month!

Title Town is back on Saturday, March 26th

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party
w/ resident DJ’s J. Malls & Gordy G.
+ returning guest, David Griffiths (NY, NY)

SATURDAY, March 26th
Shadow Lounge
5972 Baum Blvd. (E. Liberty)
9 PM-2 AM, 21+/$5; 18+/$8

Title Town is that magical last Saturday of each month when J. Malls and Gordy G. play five hours worth of 45 rpm soul and funk records. This month they’re joined by returning guest DJ, David Griffiths (New York, NY). David was the 1st guest at the debut Title Town party (Oct. ’09). He has such a good time in Pittsburgh that he’s been back on multiple occasions just to hang out and drink Yuenglings, but this month he’s officially back in the building with his play box!

When David isn’t DJ’ing he’s updating his website, www.newyorksoulrecordings.com, where he documents independently released soul 45’s originating from New York state. Perhaps you’ve heard one of the many reissue projects on Kay-Dee Records that he’s been involved with, or the Bob & Gene album (2006 Daptone Records). If not, be sure to attend this month’s Title Town. The sounds that you hear will be devastating to your ears! They may even make you shake your ass!!

For those of you who refuse to quit Mardi Grasing, get down to the sounds of NOLA’s own Eddie Bo and Allen Toussaint! What better way to wrap up Women’s History Month than with serious sister funk from the likes of Betty Lavette, or the heavy, heavy sounds of Betty Brewton! If modern soul and boogie is your thing, records by G.C. Cameron, Lowrell, and Pittsburgh’s own Brass Monkey are what we’ll bring!

Come on and DANCE GIRL! It’s going to be a STONE THING! Doors open at 9 PM and the records keep spinning ’til 2 in the morning. Early arrival is recommended.

Win a signed vinyl copy of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ new album

As a precursor to this weekend’s Title Town Soul & Funk Party at the Shadow Lounge, our special guest DJ, The Honeydripper (Daptone Records) has been kind enough to give us a SIGNED VINYL COPY of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings latest album, “I Learned the Hard Way,” available now on Daptone Records!

Pitchfork writes, “This record hardly needs to be recommended to soul fans, but even if revisitations of older music styles aren’t usually your thing, I Learned the Hard Way is worth digging up.”

New York Magazine writes,”I Learned the Hard Way is a painstaking homage to the chitlin-circuit soul of the sixties and seventies.”

To enter just RSVP “attending” at the Title Town Facebook event here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=140464076005800

Title Town November 27th

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party
SATURDAY, November 27
w/ special guest THE HONEYDRIPPER (Daptone Records, NYC)
Shadow Lounge
5972 Baum Blvd. (E. Liberty)
9 PM-2 AM, 18+ w/ ID, $5

Get it together Pittsburgh: THIS IS THE LAST TITLE TOWN OF THE YEAR!

In 2010, we had a pretty good run at steamin’ up the Shadow Lounge and delivering all-around sweaty good times, but more importantly – bringin’ you a blistering line-up of some of the deepest and most diverse funk & soul DJs around.

On Saturday, November 27, shake off those holidays blues and prepare to work off calories you haven’t even eaten yet when Title Town welcomes Brooklyn’s own Ms. Nydia Davila aka THE HONEYDRIPPER!

Lost & Found NYC writes:

“Sharon Jones may be the First Lady of Daptone Records – the Bushwick-based homebase for the finest in purist 21st Century soul. But Daptone’s First Lady behind the scenes is undoubtedly its longtime label manager, Ms. Nydia Davila, also known by her DJ-ing alias, The Honeydripper. Occasional tour DJ for the Budos Band and other Daptone roster acts, The Honeydripper is also one of the residents holding down BK’s best kept secret – “The Lost & the Found” nights at Savalas – where the soul ballads are as sublime as the drinks are stiff.”

This month she makes her Title Town debut on the wheels, bringin’ an all-vinyl box of foot-friendly funk & soul guaranteed to keep your head nodding and your booty on the dance-floor.

Support the real. Don’t miss this party.

Big ups to all of our guest DJs this year: Brad Hales (People’s Records, Detroit), Robert Wells (Ann Arbor Soul Club), Kevin Coombe (Moneytown, DC), David Griffiths (Bumpshop, NYC), Jared “JBX” Boxx (Big City Records, Bumpshop, NYC), Mr. Finewine (Downtown Soulville, NYC), Justin Hopper (Soulcialism, PGH), Drama J (Pgh) and Chairman Mao (Bumpshop, NYC).

Title Town celebrates one year!

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party
ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY/HALLOWEEN PARTY
Saturday, October 30
w/ DJ’s J.Malls, Gordy & special guest CHAIRMAN MAO (NYC)
Shadow Lounge
5972 Baum Blvd. (E. Liberty)
9 PM-2 AM, 18+ w/ ID, $5

One year ago this month I, J. Malls (The Big Throw Back), & Gordy G. (Vipers Soul Club) joined forces and embarked on a soulful, funky new venture that we christened the Title Town Soul & Funk Party. It was an instant hit, setting attendance records for events at the 10 year old Shadow Lounge venue. This time around, on October 30th, we’re not only celebrating Title Town’s ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY, but the Halloween season as well.

You may remember the dance contest that took place at the debut Title Town party. Well we’re bringing it back to commemorate the occasion! Get there early, so you don’t miss it. The winner will be awarded a $50 cash prize.

Over the course of the past year we’ve been joined by some of our favorite fellow-45-loving friends including David Griffiths (Kay-Dee Records, Bumpshop NYC), Kevin “DJ Nitekrawler” Coombe (Moneytown, DC Soul Recordings), Justin “Juddy” Hopper (Soulcialism, Vipers Soul Club), Mr. Finewine (Downtown Soulville, Bumpshop NYC), Jared “JBX” Boxx (Big City Records, Bumpshop NYC), Brad Hales (Peoples Records, A2 Soul Club), DJ Drama-J (Elevated Minds) and Robert Wells (A2 Soul Club).

This month we’ll be joined by NYC’s “Chairman” Jefferson Mao. Jeff, as he is known in civilian life, is the founding resident of the Rotten Apple’s late, lamented Bumpshop funk & soul soiree, and the last of that party’s crew to come bless us with a 45 set. When he’s not writing for XXL, Wax Poetics, or some other nationally-distributed publication, or hosting his two monthly interwebz radio shows (‘Across 135th Street’ for www.redbullmusicacademy.com and ‘Spine Blowing Decisions’ for www.spinetv.net), he’s busy conspiring with his ego trip collective cohorts on such media takeover endeavors as ego trip’s Book of Rap Lists, ego trip’s Big Book of Racism!, ego trip’s The (White) Rapper Show & Miss Rap Supreme, and the oft-delayed but one-of-these-days-forthcoming egotripland.com. Ta-dow! |

Costumes are of course encouraged, but by no means mandatory. Just make sure you wear your dancing shoes!!!
