Win a signed vinyl copy of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ new album

As a precursor to this weekend’s Title Town Soul & Funk Party at the Shadow Lounge, our special guest DJ, The Honeydripper (Daptone Records) has been kind enough to give us a SIGNED VINYL COPY of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings latest album, “I Learned the Hard Way,” available now on Daptone Records!

Pitchfork writes, “This record hardly needs to be recommended to soul fans, but even if revisitations of older music styles aren’t usually your thing, I Learned the Hard Way is worth digging up.”

New York Magazine writes,”I Learned the Hard Way is a painstaking homage to the chitlin-circuit soul of the sixties and seventies.”

To enter just RSVP “attending” at the Title Town Facebook event here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=140464076005800

Title Town celebrates one year!

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party
ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY/HALLOWEEN PARTY
Saturday, October 30
w/ DJ’s J.Malls, Gordy & special guest CHAIRMAN MAO (NYC)
Shadow Lounge
5972 Baum Blvd. (E. Liberty)
9 PM-2 AM, 18+ w/ ID, $5

One year ago this month I, J. Malls (The Big Throw Back), & Gordy G. (Vipers Soul Club) joined forces and embarked on a soulful, funky new venture that we christened the Title Town Soul & Funk Party. It was an instant hit, setting attendance records for events at the 10 year old Shadow Lounge venue. This time around, on October 30th, we’re not only celebrating Title Town’s ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY, but the Halloween season as well.

You may remember the dance contest that took place at the debut Title Town party. Well we’re bringing it back to commemorate the occasion! Get there early, so you don’t miss it. The winner will be awarded a $50 cash prize.

Over the course of the past year we’ve been joined by some of our favorite fellow-45-loving friends including David Griffiths (Kay-Dee Records, Bumpshop NYC), Kevin “DJ Nitekrawler” Coombe (Moneytown, DC Soul Recordings), Justin “Juddy” Hopper (Soulcialism, Vipers Soul Club), Mr. Finewine (Downtown Soulville, Bumpshop NYC), Jared “JBX” Boxx (Big City Records, Bumpshop NYC), Brad Hales (Peoples Records, A2 Soul Club), DJ Drama-J (Elevated Minds) and Robert Wells (A2 Soul Club).

This month we’ll be joined by NYC’s “Chairman” Jefferson Mao. Jeff, as he is known in civilian life, is the founding resident of the Rotten Apple’s late, lamented Bumpshop funk & soul soiree, and the last of that party’s crew to come bless us with a 45 set. When he’s not writing for XXL, Wax Poetics, or some other nationally-distributed publication, or hosting his two monthly interwebz radio shows (‘Across 135th Street’ for www.redbullmusicacademy.com and ‘Spine Blowing Decisions’ for www.spinetv.net), he’s busy conspiring with his ego trip collective cohorts on such media takeover endeavors as ego trip’s Book of Rap Lists, ego trip’s Big Book of Racism!, ego trip’s The (White) Rapper Show & Miss Rap Supreme, and the oft-delayed but one-of-these-days-forthcoming egotripland.com. Ta-dow! |

Costumes are of course encouraged, but by no means mandatory. Just make sure you wear your dancing shoes!!!

Long story short, as we gear up for our one-year anniversary, we’re going back to the basics this month.

What we’re doin’: Only the finest, underground rare soul, funk and and rhythm & blues vinyl – played for five straight hours at a volume suitable for dancing.

What you’re doin’: Gettin’ down to infectiously danceable grooves from Eddie Kendricks, Curtis Mayfield, Martha & The Vandellas, Nate Evans, Honey & The Bees and more while the fine folks at the SHADOW LOUNGE serve up the rest.

We turn the lights way down low and spin those heavy tunes to help you do you’re thing all night long.

TITLE TOWN returns Saturday, July 31 w/ guest KEVIN COOMBE (DC)

Back once again, it’s Pittsburgh’s premier Saturday Night Dance Party: 5+ hours of rare SOUL, super heavy FUNK, and vintage RHYTHM & BLUES – all killer no filler, original 45rpm vinyl played SUPER LOUD and SUPER BAD – all within the comfy “air conditioned” confines of East Liberty’s SHADOW LOUNGE.

We’ve got those fine-tuned grooves of the highest order; lost soul 45s from Pittsburgh, Pa., the Windy City and the Motor City – all frantically mixed up in an adulterated cocktail of wildly paced rhythms and funky beats.

This is a party for those that like their music deep.

KEVIN “DJ NITEKRAWLER” COOMBE

It’s summer in the city and it’s a perfect time to welcome back Washington DC’s Kevin Coombe aka DJ Nitekrawler. Recently featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, Kevin hosts the successful MONEYTOWN funk and soul party and is the founder of DC Soul Recordings. He’s not only a schooled DJ, but a catalyst behind the cataloging of records by legends and lesser-known artists of the DC soul era.

The Washington Post writes, “DJ Nitekrawler has getting crowds to dance down to a science: wickedly funky drums. Deep, rubbery bass. Punching horns. Shaking tambourine. The unmistakable chicka-chicka shuffle of wah-wah guitar.”

If you missed Nitekrawler’s explosive set last year, never fear; you’ve got another chance. Now go dance!

Celebrate 10 Years of the Shadow Lounge with Title Town

In 2000 the Shadow Lounge opened at the corner of Baum and South Highland – in East Liberty. Owners Justin Strong and Tim Guthrie created the lounge and performance space to foster an environment where people could come together over one thing – a mutual love of music and art.

Ten years later and still managed the same way – the Shadow Lounge – has been voted as one of the Burgh’s most culturally significant venues for entertainment and continues to make an impact on East Liberty and the Pittsburgh music scene.

TITLE TOWN is excited and honored to be part of DAY 2 of the Shadow Lounge 10 Year Anniversary Party. We’ll be doing our usual thing with 5 hours of the finest soul, funk and R&B music put on wax.

We’re also pleased to have Pittsburgh’s own DJ Drama-J join us this month. Drama-J is a DJ with deep roots in the world of beat digging, an avid record collector, beatmaker, drummer and founder of Pittsburgh based hip-hop trio Elevated Mindz.

Don’t miss it!

Moneytown will be returning to DC starting JUNE 4TH at it’s new home: Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar (1104 H Street NE Washington DC), w/ guest: DJ Gordy G. (PA)

The night will still be occuring every 1st Friday, the talented DJ Guests and overall vibe will remain constant, but the new venue will add to that with a much better sound system, more dance floor space, a WAY better beer selection plus beer specials, and even a BBQ chef in the rear courtyard!

For the kick-off event I’m bringing down the heat, aka Pittsburgh’s number one Northern Soul DJ, Gordy G.!! Gordy has been involved in multiple high profile PGH parties including “Viper’s Soul Club” and now the tremendously successful “Titletown”. He regularly guests at soul parties from Ohio to Michigan. Now you get a chance to hear him kill it along side myself on the LMW wheels of steel. Will be a fantastic time, just DO NOT forget to tie those dancing shoes TIGHT!

First off, last month was pure craziness. Don’t worry if you snoozed, Title Town is continuing to bring you some of the rarest and tightest grooves from some of the most respected funk & soul deejays in the game today!

This month TITLE TOWN welcomes special guest DJ, Jared “JBX” Boxx representing NYC’s Lost & Found Crew and Big City Records.

Jared’s a DJ/collector/dealer who’s been immersed in the NYC scene for over a decade. He’s been supplying the creme de la creme of world famous DJ’s/producers with wax via his affiliation with notorious digging spots like A-1 Records, The Sound Library, and most recently Big City Records.

He had a five year residency, along w/ Chairman Mao and past Title Town guests – Mr. Fine Wine & David Griffiths, at APT with their monthly Bumpshop party.

He and the Lost & Found Crew have been holding down their long-running Tuesday night @ Savales in Brooklyn and in 2009 they were invited to the basement of Santos Party House by rapper/producer/resident DJ, Q-Tip, where they can still be found monthly during Danny Krivit’s 718 Sessions.

If you have yet to experience TITLE TOWN then its due time that you did. Get yourself down to the East End’s most epic, dance floor-rousing soul happening at Shadow Lounge on Saturday, April 24th!
