Wow. Where do we start? Since October 2009, TITLE TOWN has been holding down every last Saturday of the month, making the Shadow Lounge your “go-to” party spot destination for the funky good word and authenticity that is soul music.

Voted one of the best dance parties of 2010 by Pittsburgh City Paper readers, TITLE TOWN has secured itself as a staple of Pittsburgh’s music scene and a hedonistic throwback to the days of legendary clubs and long-lost night spots of the ‘60s and ‘70s that featured the music we so passionately play for you every month.

After 2 years, and an all-star line-up of national guests including WFMU’s Mr. Fine Wine, Bump Shop’s David Griffiths, Ann Arbor Soul Club’s Brad Hales and Robert Wells, Big City Records’ Jared “JBX” Boxx, and Daptone’s The Honeydripper, the Lounge continues to be packed with the best soul-loving dancers and drinkers at a Pittsburgh club.

Enough back story. This month, it’s our big anniversary shin-dig and we’re gonna sweat like it’s still summer. To say thanks, the first 100 people through the door will receive a free, limited edition copy of the TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk 45 MIX Vol. 2. Arrive early … the limited edition CD version of our first mix disappeared by 10PM!

We’ve also been diggin’ up some special, anniversary-only heat seekers to mix up into a tight five hour, analog blitz of raucous dance-floor rage. We’ll keep the good times goin’ and goin with brand new spins from Clarence Reid, Nina Simone, Eddie Bo and TITLE TOWN classics from Eddie Kendricks, The Temptations, Etta James and more.

We’ll have drink specials, funky projections, and the Brassero Grill gourmet taco truck parked outside. Don’t forget, you must enter through the Shadow Lounge entrance on Baum Boulevard to get in. There is NO admission to TITLE TOWN through AVA Lounge.

The Shadow Lounge is a smoke-free venue committed to bringing the best in local and national acts to Pittsburgh PA. The Lounge is located at 5972 Baum Blvd. Pittsburgh, PA. Phone: (412) 363-8277. Guests must be18 and over to attend.

Whatever happened to my Transylvania twist?

As we approach our 2-year anniversary, it just so happens that TITLE TOWN falls on Halloween weekend. And unless you’ve been living under a gravestone, you know this will be a party.

On Saturday, October 29, prepare for what is sure to be one of the wildest, soul-chilling Halloween dance parties around as Title Town invites Pittsburgh’s trail blazin’ ambassador of Northern SOUL & R&B Justin “Juddy” Hopper (Vipers Soul Club, Soulcialism, Pandemic…) to dust off his box of tricks n’ treats for the dance-floor.

After helping to cement Pittsburgh’s place in the burgeoning nationwide soul scene, we’re super excited to have Juddy back at the Lounge. What to expect: An unholy concoction of blister-inducing Northern soul, dirty-as-hell R&B, and a bit of psychopathic Jump Blues all mixed up in a stiff cocktail for your ever-lovin’ ears.

Life’s too short for mediocre music, so get to the Shadow Lounge where we’ll be slingin’ back vintage dance tunes galore while you pour back libations, dance manically and get sweaty with a bunch of your closest, costumed friends.

This month, expect 5 hours of wickedly rare, yet frightfully danceable soul, funk and R&B records including feel-good classics from SHIRLEY ELLIS, THE MIRACLES, JACKIE WILSON, THE 5 ROYALES, YOUNG JESSIE, THE ARTISTICS and so many more.

Prepare for what is sure to be a feast for all your senses – we’ll have Oktoberfest brews, funky projections on the wall, the Brassero Grill taco truck outside the Lounge, and we’ll be handing out a bunch of prizes including gift certificates, t-shirts, and vinyl records:

COSTUME CONTEST! (around 11:30 PM)
Prizes in each category for:

• Best Overall Costume
• Funkiest Costume
• Sexiest Costume
• Best Mashup Costume

Hands down, there is no better time you’ll have for 5 bucks on a Saturday night!

Whole lot of shakin’…New York Night Train’s Jonathan Toubin at Title Town!

For two straight years JONATHAN TOUBIN’S Soul Clap and Dance-Off has been voted one of the most consistently bad ass, raddest, sweat-bathed dance parties in New York City and beyond.

On Saturday, August 27th, Title Town Soul & Funk Party welcomes NEW YORK NIGHT TRAIN’S JONATHAN TOUBIN to the Shadow Lounge to drop his R&B-heavy-wild party-style mix on your ever lovin’ ears for one our biggest events of the summer!

TOUBIN’s concept is simple – all night dancing to wild 45s of the finest soul, funk, R&B, garage, doo wop, rockabilly, British invasion, girl group, and dance craze recordings you’ve never heard – and of course – exclusively on 45RPM vinyl. Toubin’s parties not only sell beyond capacity in NYC, but he has soul traveled all the way from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine and internationally from Tel Aviv to Mexico City – including monthly residencies in New York, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Oakland, and PDX.

One of the best-known DJs in the New York, Jonathan has been embarking on a new mission: teaching the underground to dance…and dance together, no less. Earlier in the summer, he launched Land Of 1,000 Dances, a multimedia effort that combined projections of retro dances with his deep collection and live dancers—including Contortions mastermind James Chance, Kid Congo Powers and Anna Copa Cabanna—to help people learn crazes of the past.

“What was sad about The Twist was that people danced together before that,” Toubin says. “These dances are the first ones people danced alone. But on the other hand, they are far less lonely than dances are today.”

The NY Press writes, “Toubin is trying to bring a sense of community back to nightlife, fighting against the alienation that’s seeped into cool culture. And if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s Toubin.”

We do this for long enough,” he says, “these dances are going to become part of the culture again. People will take them to different states and different countries and they will just keep going and going.”

This party will sell out. Early arrival is strongly recommended!

Let’s cut right to the chase. Title Town Soul & Funk Party brings you an event dedicated to the almighty 45 RPM single: This is SOUL NIGHT at The Hideout.

TITLE TOWN returns July 30th. Spread the word.

Slight change of plans. The Shadow Lounge Outdoor Sound Series has been cancelled.

So here’s what’s up:

It’s actually quite simple – TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party will go down as usual on Saturday, July 30th at the Shadow Lounge. We’ll kick things off at 9pm with our usual mix of soul, funk and R&B 45s – all vinyl – all for the dance floor. Still $5 at the door ($8 if you’re 18+) and the music don’t stop til’ 2AM.

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party is that monthly moment of musical goodness that makes you wanna move – cool, funky, soul, with unstoppable momentum, played at a maximum volume for your dancing pleasure.

Expect even more rare grooves, early-to-mid 70’s funk, shake-yr-hips R&B, disco-funk, boogie… plus new cuts from artists like THE ARTISTICS, ACE SPECTRUM, ROY AYERS, JOE BATAAN, FAMILY OF EVE, BOBBY BLAND and never-before-played cuts from Daptone’s CHARLES BRADLEY and SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS!

As always, your hosts J. Malls and Gordy sift through attics and basements and hit the ol’ ones and twos with obscure classics with that Motown sound, funk from Memphis, Philly and Chicago soul – mixed together, hands-on-vinyl-style, for your dancing feet.

Spread the word. It’s gonna be a wild party.

Pittsburgh’s freshest dance monthly gets back in action this month to kick off summer 2011. Saturday, June 25th and every last Saturday of the month, Title Town DJs J. Malls and Gordy showcase the grooves that make you move – a 5-hour slice of the good stuff, created in Philadelphia, Detroit, and Memphis during the ’60s and ’70s, and played at maximum volume in the comfortably cool confines of East Liberty’s Shadow Lounge and Blue Room. This is a soul party. With a few recent deep digging excursions to Ohio, Detroit, D.C. and New York, we’ve unearthed a mess of obscure SOUL classics, deep FUNK cuts, hot LATIN soul and a bunch more.

This month check out new sounds you probably haven’t heard before, fresh out the box 45s from JOE BATAAN, MAJOR LANCE, LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY, ANN PEEBLES, and so much more, more, more… It will officially be summer, we’re giving away some t-shirts and prizes, projecting throwback films on the wall and TURNIN’ IT UP so you can get down. At 9pm sharp, expect a few laid-back tunes that wouldn’t feel out of place on a breezy summer evening and then we’ll open it up to the tightly wound, high-energy and HIGHLY DANCEABLE selections of decades past.

Blaring horns and tight rhythms, it’s a collision of the drummer’s beats, hooks and pure dance-floor energy that takes you back to a future that is never forgotten. Do your ears a favor and don’t miss this party. Early arrival is recommended.
