We’ve got soul! Title Town is back on April 28th and we’re kickin’ off the TT Record Bar + I DIG PGH’s Johnny Daye feature

It’s that one of the night of month where vinyl has never really gone a way, it’s that party on the East End where everything is classic, yet the sounds are as fresh and original as anything coming out today.

Title Town is the one night of the month where we shake up the Shadow Lounge with five hours of high-octane, straight-ahead, old school soul and funk grooves.

If you haven’t been, it’s a new kind of nightlife experience, a bridge between past and present, from Detroit to Memphis, from the mid-’60s to the late ’70s, Lee Moses to Lee Fields – and it’s happening every month.

ANNOUNCING THE TT RECORD BAR!
This month, arrive extra early or take a break from the dance-floor. We’re teaming up with the Pittsburgh Vinyl Con and proud to be debuting the first-ever TT RECORD BAR!

What it is: The Shadow Lounge BLUE ROOM is gonna packed full of VINYL RECORDS – 45s and LPs – picture sleeves and white label promos – dealers from Pittsburgh and around the globe. Classic and obscure Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Gospel, Punk and more!

Bring a few extra bucks, pour back libations, get down on the dance-floor and dig through the waxy stuff – all under one roof!

The feeling is right! Title Town returns on Saturday, March 31st!

Once again, it’s on. For those not familiar with TITLE TOWN, the last few months have been bananas. It’s that one night of the month when Pittsburgh’s finest, funkiest dancers take over the Shadow Lounge for a night showcasing all things good about soul music.

Come get down with us on Saturday, March 31st for a sweaty, drink and dance-filled soiree of the highest order. We’ll be doin’ the usual, all-vinyl, all-45 mix: equal parts ‘60s soul grooves, deep funk, end-of-the-night disco and some of that old, raw rhythm & blues to top it all off.

Joining forces with us this month is none other than Brooklyn, New York’s David Griffiths. David helped us kick off the inaugural Title Town a few years ago and he’s back again this month for another sure-to-be-funky guest spot.

In addition to DJing, David has curated some of the finest soul and funk reissues on labels like Daptone and Kay-Dee Records. This month we’re featuring The Darling Dears And Funky Heavy “And I Love You / I Don’t Think I’ll Ever Love Another” 45 on Griffiths’ own Orivious Records. It’s an official, from-the-master-tapes issue of one of the most sought after funk single ever recorded.

So whaddya say? In a time when dance music is suffering, the music takes center stage at TITLE TOWN. Move and groove to the CLASSICS from artists like the ISLEY BROTHERS, ETTA JAMES, and FREDA PAYNE, plus shake it on down to highly danceable, rare soul and funk cuts from New York, New Orleans, Detroit and everything in between. The cover is cheap as chips and there will be drink specials til’ midnight.

Do your ears a favor and don’t miss this party.

Early arrival is recommended. You must enter through the Shadow Lounge on Baum Boulevard.

RSVP right here.

Win tickets to see Charles Bradley And His Extraordinaires at the Rex Theater!

It’s a big, BIG month for Title Town when Charles Bradley And His Extraordinaires roll into the ‘Burgh for a show at the Rex Theater. We’re lucky enough to be spinning a few of our favorite records during the show and now Title Town and Grey Area Productions are giving you a chance to score FREE tickets to the show on Friday and Title Town Soul & Funk Party at the Shadow Lounge on Saturday night – joining us on Saturday will be DJ’s BSears & Coolhands from The New Day in Austin, Texas!

‘No Time For Dreaming” is one of Rolling Stone’s best albums of the year. RS writes, “Every brass blast and chicken scratch could have come straight off a 1968 Stax Records release, but it’s Bradley’s ragged, resilient powerhouse singing that makes this soul, not “soul.”

Paste Magazine writes, “No Time For Dreaming not only prevails as a defining culmination of Bradley’s lifelong musicianship to date, but also furthers the argument that Daptone Records can do no wrong.”

To enter:

1) Simply become a fan of Title Town Soul & Funk Party on Facebook; and,
2) Enter your name and e-mail address below.

Stop what you’re doin’ and get your dance on this month at Title Town Soul & Funk Party when we welcome one of the premier record and dance party crews in the U.S., DJ’s BSears & Coolhands of THE NEW DAY Funk and Soul Night and FRIENDS OF SOUND RECORDS in AUSTIN, TEXAS.

We’re goin’ head-to-head, tune-for-tune as we join forces with two of our favorite rare vinyl specialists all the way from the Lone Star State.

We don’t do guest DJs every month, but this is a party we’ve been most looking forward to. If, for some reason, you need to be persuaded — The New Day has been holding it down every month with a wide-spread spectrum of rare soul and massively funky funk from the ‘60s through the early ‘80s and has attracted regular guest DJ spots from some of the heaviest collectors in the game.

In a city known as the live music capital of the world, The New Day has been holding its own and has created a vibe that connects with people…with the some of the finest, funkiest flowing selections of rare soul vinyl around.

Finally, expect drink specials, funky SOUL TRAIN projections on the wall and the Brassero Grill gourmet taco truck parked outside. Don’t forget, you must enter through the Shadow Lounge entrance on Baum Boulevard to get in. There is NO admission to TITLE TOWN through AVA Lounge.

So get yourself (and your friends) ready for a TITLE TOWN that will move your feet, captivate your SOUL, and make you DANCE…and that’s exactly what this music demands you do. It’s going to be a party.

Soul Travelin’ Blog Update: Soulsville & The Crescent City

Greetings from Lafayette, Louisiana! We’re making a much needed pit stop in Cajun Country for food, beer and some sleep.  Thought we’d post a quick blog update with a few cool photos from the road. Shout out to Shangri-La Records in Memphis and a big thank you to Jameson at the Poplar Lounge and DJ Buck Wilders for spinning some sweet jams. People can sure get down on a Sunday night!

As you can see from the photos, the music, food and amazing people of New Orleans have kept us busy for a few days. It’s our first time here, but from what we can tell from our soul travels…the city is alive and people, both young and old, are keeping the faith and pushing things forward with an energy and passion like no other. We’re stoked to be playing records this Sunday at The Saint (961 St Mary, Lower Garden District).  Music starts around 10pm.

Tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 20), check us out at the Big Top in Houston where we’ll be guest DJ’ing at A Fistful of Soul. On Saturday night, we’ll be at The Highball in Austin, TX with DJ’s BSears and Coolhands at The New Day Soul Party!

Peaches Records, New Orleans.

Oyster & Shrimp Po-Boy. (Acme Oyster House, New Orleans)

Seafood gumbo. (Coop’s, New Orleans)

J.Malls climbs a ladder to rescue some records from an abandoned building above a barber shop.

We’re hitting the road!

Brace yourselves. The Holiday season is behind us and now we’re hittin’ the open road in a cheap rental car…packed with two turntables, a mic and few boxes of killer soul 45s.

We’re headed south and bringing that Title Town sound to a few funky spots in Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas. The mini-tour kicks off on January 15th at the Poplar Lounge in Memphis and we’ll wrap everything up right here in ‘Burgh at the Shadow Lounge on Saturday, January 28th.

Expect a whole host of funky soul-laden goodness. Lots of Title Town classics, Northern Soul rarities, deep & disco-driven funk, ‘50s R&B and everything in between.

Happy Holidays! Here’s some free music to play while you’re sippin’ your egg nog.

Hey everyone.  Over here at Title Town, we wanted to say thanks for all the support over the past year – for coming out early and having a beer or dancing for 5 straight hours.  If you didn’t get a mix CD in November, here it is – packaged up all nice n’ easy in an easy-to-download ZIP file.  No holiday tracks on this one (check out J.Malls’ Xmas mix for that), but an hour or so of rare funk and soul grooves, Title Town classics and a few things we’ve never played – all recorded from original 45s.

Get ready for New Year’s Eve 2012 with TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party at the Shadow Lounge & AVA!  Advance tickets are on sale now.  Click here to purchase.
