“Voted one of Pittsburgh’s best dance parties of 2013 by Pittsburgh City Paper readers!”

Yes, folks, the holiday season is behind us and the Steel City’s wildest soul dance party returns to the Brillobox on Saturday, January 11th to kick off 2014.

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party never fails to start the new year with a BANG – stiff drinks, stacks of wax and only the best grooves from the obscure to the vaults of Motown, Stax, Atlantic, Chess and more. The recipe is simple: Two turntables, all vinyl.

It’s a format that we’ve been dedicated to since 2009: Northern and ‘60s soul, deep funk, vintage R&B and everything in between…from mod jazz to disco to Latin boogaloo.

It’s sweaty, loud and just what you need. Get on the dance floor.

“Voted one of Pittsburgh’s best dance parties of 2013 by Pittsburgh City Paper readers!”

It feels like winter, so we’re gonna warm it up. TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party returns to the Brillobox on Saturday, December 14th.

Riding high into our fourth year, we’re looking to up the game even further for our last party of 2013. The records are primed and ready – the funky, sultry, SOULFUL sounds of TITLE TOWN have been keeping the dance floor jampacked ‘til the very end.

Let’s shake off the winter chill with five hours of the good stuff – rare Northern and ‘60s soul, deep funk, wild rhythm & blues and a few not-so-silent holiday chestnuts to help you get your jollies on.

We’ve got full control of the one’s and two’s this month, so expect heaps of never before played tunes, a smattering of TITLE TOWN “classics” and of course Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Otis Redding spreadin’ that funky, holiday cheer – all at 45 r.pm.!

The Brillobox helps you out with the boozy comforts while you boogie, bop and boogaloo ‘til you’re on your merry way.

Thanks to all the wonderful people who make TITLE TOWN something we to look forward to every month.

“It was a very good year!”

“Voted one of Pittsburgh’s best dance parties of 2013 by Pittsburgh City Paper readers!”

We’re still reelin’ from having wrapped four successful years of TITLE TOWN, but Pittsburgh’s dance-centric soul party is turnin’ things up on November 9th with a special guest appearance from Washington D.C.’s DJ NITEKRAWLER – DJ, collector and driving force behind D.C. Soul Recordings and MONEYTOWN.

As any music fan knows, a steady diet of familiar, yet fresh sounds is the perfect recipe for a good dance party, so expect everything from obscure ‘60s & ‘70s soul, deep and classic funk, vintage rhythm & blues, Latin boogaloo, uptempo disco and anything (and everything) else that makes your Saturday night move – all at 45 revolutions per minute.

ABOUT DJ NITEKRAWLER

We gotta say, not many DJs in the game can throw down an all-45 set of downright obscure and forgotten 45s while maintaining a high level of feel-good party rocking craftsmanship. Kevin Coombe a.k.a DJ Nitekrawler has been honing his skills at H Street’s Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar for years. His MONEYTOWN party continues to be D.C.’s best outlet for a dance-friendly mix of funk, soul, boogaloo, breakbeats, Latin, and more.

The Washington Post writes, “DJ Nitekrawler has getting crowds to dance down to a science: wickedly funky drums. Deep, rubbery bass. Punching horns. Shaking tambourine. The unmistakable chicka-chicka shuffle of wah-wah guitar.” He’s not only a schooled DJ dropping mean grooves, but a catalyst behind the cataloging of records by legends and lesser-known artists of the Washington D.C. & Maryland funk, soul, & R&B era of the ’60s to the early ’90s (including all related sub-genres and descendants such as Go-Go and Disco). In 2010, DJ Nitekrawler was featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and is working on a book that delves deeper into the D.C. and Maryland music.

Don’t miss the one-two punch of DJ Nitekrawler and TITLE TOWN’s resident DJ Gordy G.

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party 4 YEAR ANNIVERSARY with New York City’s MR. FINE WINE

TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party
4 YEAR ANNIVERSARY w/ guest DJ MR. FINE WINE (WFMU’s Downtown Soulville)
Saturday, October 12th
BRILLOBOX (4104 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh)
9pm – 2am; $6; 21+
RSVP HERE

On Saturday, October 12th, TITLE TOWN Soul & Funk Party will celebrate its four-year anniversary at the Brillobox. The party, founded by host DJs J.Malls and Gordy G., will continue its tradition of bringing some of the top DJs of the day to the Burgh with a special guest appearance from New York City’s MR. FINE WINE – DJ and radio host of WFMU’s Downtown Soulville.

In addition to Mr Fine Wine, New York City’s DJ ONE MINT JULEP will be in the house spinning her brand of wild R&B and soul.

ABOUT MR. FINE WINE

Mr. Fine Wine grew up in Detroit in the 1960s and ’70s, surrounded by music and by music-industry people. His schoolmates included the offspring of Motown stars like Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin; his uncle (believe it or not!) taught John Lee Hooker how to play guitar chords and owned a local label that put out jazz and soul records. An avid collector of soul 45s for more than 25 years now, Fine Wine took up DJ’ing soon after he relocated to New York City. His radio show, “Downtown Soulville” (www.wfmu.org/playlists/sv), has been converting casual listeners around the globe into soul freaks since 1994. TimeOut London magazine called it one of the best independent music podcasts in the world, and the Village Voice named it New York’s best radio show in 2011. In addition to presiding over many local dance parties through the years (including the Empire State Soul Club, Bumpshop, Horse River Social, and Thee Knights of the Round Tables), he has held down a weekly residency at Manhattan dive bar Botanica since 1996—perhaps the longest-running weekly soul-45 listening party anywhere, and one that has attracted visiting luminaries such as Keb Darge, Yo La Tengo, Cut Chemist, the Dap Kings, and the Dirtbombs. Fine Wine has spun his across-the-board mix of vintage R&B, soul, blues, and funk in Spain, Belgium, Turkey, Italy, Russia, Scotland, Finland, England, Canada, Norway, and Germany, and he has backed the likes of Sharon Jones, the Mighty Hannibal, the Gories, Brian Auger, Dee Dee Ramone, DJ Shadow, the Detroit Cobras, Cody Black, Rudy Ray Moore, and Nathaniel Mayer. He has also compiled and written liner notes for the collections “Vital Organs” (Grooovysounds Unltd.), “Crash of Thunder,” “Teach Me to Monkey,” “Scratch That Itch,” and “Just a Little Bit of the Jumpin’ Bean” (Vampisoul); he has two more Vampisoul compilations due out in 2014. Fine Wine and his friend the soul legend the Mighty Hannibal are the subjects of a feature-length documentary film, currently in production, called “Showtime.”
